This listed Art Deco cinema was built in 1931 as the Capitol cinema on the site of an earlier film theatre- The Alpha Picture Palace. This was opened in 1904 and is considered to have been the first cinema in Herts. Latterly the cinema became The Odeon but this closed in 1995 and remained derelict until 2014 when James Hannaway took up the challenge to refurbish and re-open The Oddyssey -named in homage to the local film director Stanley Kubrick. It is a thriving, independent, single-screen arthouse cinema; sister cinema to The Rex, Berkhamsted
